This piece was made in response to my Rumsey Scholarship funded Archeological dig in Crete, Greece at the ancient Minoan town Gournia. Custom plexiglass case displays a print made of pressed pomegranate seeds and raspberries, covered by plastic layers.
The layers of plastic represent stratigraphic layers. I was inspired by the amount of clay pottery shards I found while digging in an ancient dump. I was shocked to see an abundance of pottery pieces. Pottery was the main way of storing food and resources during the Minoan era. I realized their pottery was our plastic and pondered on what our layers of history would look like.
The six prints made of pressed pomegranate and raspberries are symbolic of the 6 seeds in the Greek myth "Ovid's Metamorphosis". Pomegranate seeds were found at the Gournia archeological site, raspberries are also connected to Crete and Greek mythology. In the myth Persephone eats six seeds and traps her in the underground for 6 months of the year, allowing her to return to her mother Demeter for the other 6 months of the year. Demeter is the goddess of harvest and grieved her daughters absence for 6 months explaining the seasons and lack of food.
This work reflects on our state of the planet and how humans impact the climate and health of the earth.
